Drawing on their experience delivering bridge and transportation infrastructure projects throughout Massachusetts, Mike and Jason provided students with an overview of the estimating and scheduling processes used to plan and execute major bridge construction projects. The session was designed to support students as they begin their capstone project, which involves developing a complete proposal for a theoretical bridge project in Massachusetts.
The presentation walked students through the real-world approach to developing both construction cost estimates and project schedules, including key considerations related to quantities, productivity, sequencing, risk, and resource planning. To provide practical industry insight, Mike and Jason also demonstrated the software platforms commonly used on infrastructure projects, including HCSS HeavyBid for estimating and Primavera P6 for scheduling. Students were able to see firsthand how bridge projects are priced, planned, and organized.
By connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications, the session provided students with a better understanding of the tools, processes, and decision-making involved in delivering complex transportation projects. Mike and Jason enjoyed the opportunity to share their experiences, answer student questions, and help prepare the next generation of construction professionals as they begin their capstone work and transition into the industry.
